Oh no!, it’s black tie…

Black Tie Dressing for Middle-Aged Men:

Elegant dinner jacket

When a role calls for black tie attire, middle-aged men have the opportunity to look like the part or, frankly, look ridiculous. The black tie dress code is rooted in tradition, but for those who dress like this less regularly, stree can take the fun out of what could be a great event.

Start with a well-tailored black dinner suit (tuxedo) . In 4D’s opinion blue is a no-no and white has the potential of a) making you the only one in the room who has chosen this or b) bringing on red wine or bolgnese sauce into the conversation.

Now 4Ders, let’s be frank, some of us are still trying to wear 34 waist trousers, whilst being closer to (insert your size here) . MAKE SURE you try on your old dinner suit weeks before an event ! And don’t think that breathing in all evening is a good look :-). A comfier fit will make you feel better about yourself.

Peak lapels can work well, while a single-breasted jacket with one button maintains the clean silhouette expected of black tie. Fit is key. Consider going one size or a half size up —avoid overly slim cuts that look “youthful” or “trendy”; instead, opt for structured tailoring that complements a mature physique.

The shirt should ALWAYS be white, pleated or plain-front, with a turndown collar. A wing collar is acceptable but can make you look like a compere and you’ll be fiddling with your tie all evening. Double cuffs with understated cufflinks—silver, onyx, or mother-of-pearl—add polish but frankly single cuffs are fine !

A black silk bow tie is non-negotiable. Pre-tied versions are convenient, but a self-tied bow adds authenticity and character. Pair with a black cummerbund or a low-cut formal waistcoat to maintain the traditional waistline coverage. Marks and Spencer have accessories you might need here .

Trousers must match the jacket and feature a satin stripe down the leg. Ensure they are hemmed to break cleanly over polished black patent leather oxfords in a very formal settign or slipons will be fine for a more relaxed “do”.

Accessories should be minimal: a white pocket square, a discreet dress watch (if any), and well-groomed hair. Avoid novelty items or bold patterns AT ALL COSTS!.

Now, for those 4Ders who are of a certain age - Moss Bros , (now just Moss ) will rent a dinner suit for somewhere between £80 and £180 . Have a look here at their hire pages

Ultimately, black tie is about restraint and elegance. For middle-aged men, it’s a chance to channel timeless style with confidence and dignity—projecting authority, poise, and presence that younger actors may not yet possess. When done right, it’s not just dressing for the part—it’s becoming it.
